The Waterfront Hotel sits on top of the Plaza Merdeka shopping center and looks directly out over the Sarawak River. It is one of the most well-known independent boutique hotels in Kuching, and the location in the heart of the city is genuinely hard to beat. The Sarawak River runs right outside, the old town shophouses are walkable, and the evening promenade along the waterfront is one of the most pleasant things you can do in Kuching without spending any money at all.
We booked the Waterfront Premium King Suite Riverview at around 550 RM per night. When Vincent made the reservation, he added a note mentioning we were on our honeymoon and that this was my first time visiting Southeast Asia. We did not expect anything from it. The hotel had other plans.
To be completely clear: this was not a sponsored stay. We are not big enough for that. This was just a genuinely unexpected and generous surprise from the staff, and it is the kind of thing that deserves to be documented accurately.

The Upgrade: Nissa Adena Suite
At check-in, we were given a complimentary upgrade to the Nissa Adena Suite, which normally runs around 1,500 RM per night. It is one of the largest suites in the hotel and the one detail we did not see coming: it is a two-story loft.
The staff at check-in mentioned the upgrade matter-of-factly and wished us a happy honeymoon. No elaborate ceremony, no waiting for a manager to come out and make a production of it. Just a warm, genuine moment at the front desk. That quiet thoughtfulness set the tone for the entire stay.
The Suite
Downstairs: Living and Dining Area
The suite is named after the artist Nissa and the decor reflects that. Grand, with real character, rather than the standard neutral luxury palette. Actual art on the walls, considered furniture choices, and a color palette that has personality without being overwhelming. This is what a boutique hotel suite is supposed to feel like: specific, personal, and unlike what you would find at a chain property.
The hotel left us a beautiful welcome cake and a selection of local Malaysian snacks on arrival. The snacks included local Sarawakian treats that are specific to the region, which was a nice touch given that this was my first time in Sarawak specifically.
The dining area is large and fully equipped: microwave, Nespresso machine, a large kettle, and a working printer. This was the first time either of us has ever seen a printer in a hotel room. Genuinely useful if you need boarding passes or travel documents. We did not end up using it, but the fact that it was there and functional was a novelty worth noting.
The one practical note: the bedroom is upstairs, which means carrying luggage up a flight of stairs yourself. Vincent handled that part.
Upstairs: Bedroom and Bathroom
The bedroom has a massive king bed, decorated with a towel heart for our honeymoon, a flat-screen Samsung TV, a dedicated air purifier, and its own separate air conditioning controls independent from the rest of the suite. Having separate climate control for the sleeping area is a detail I had not thought to look for before and now actively seek out. The ability to cool the bedroom without freezing the living room is a real quality-of-life improvement.
The closet is stocked with thick robes, branded slippers, a luggage scale (extremely useful for avoiding overweight bag fees), and a Dyson hair dryer. Having the Dyson was a highlight for me personally. The gap between a Dyson and a standard hotel dryer is significant. A standard hotel dryer takes twice as long and leaves your hair feeling like it survived something. A Dyson takes half the time and leaves it smooth. At this point I notice its presence or absence in every hotel room we stay in.
The bathroom is large: a deep soaking tub, a walk-in shower with a waterfall showerhead, high-quality branded toiletries, and a bidet hose. The soaking tub was positioned close enough to the window that you could look out over the river while using it, which is the kind of architectural decision that earns a hotel genuine points in my book.
The view: Floor-to-ceiling windows looking out over the Sarawak River and the Kuching skyline. This is the defining feature of the suite. Sitting up there in the evening looking at that view made the entire stay feel like a proper occasion. At night, the lights reflecting off the river have a warmth to them that does not look entirely real. We spent our first evening just sitting at the window doing nothing, which is a specific kind of vacation success.
Pool, Gym, and Lounge
Gym (Level 5): Open daily from 7:00 AM to 9:00 PM. Solid equipment selection: cardio machines, free weights, kettlebells, barbells, and a hydration station. More complete than the average boutique hotel gym. The space is well-maintained and the equipment felt current. Not a large gym, but a thorough one.
Pool (Level 4): Open from 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, with a scenic view of the city. Right next to the pool is Zapatos, the hotel's lounge bar. One note: the pool occasionally closes for private events, so check the schedule if you are planning around it. We went in the late morning on our second day and had it mostly to ourselves.
Iredium Lounge: Complimentary access for suite guests. A comfortable space to wind down between outings. We used it once in the afternoon when we came back from the waterfront and wanted somewhere quiet to sit before getting ready for dinner.
Cafe Via Mare: The hotel's all-day dining restaurant, covering both local Sarawakian dishes and Western options. We had one breakfast here and the local dishes, specifically the Sarawak Laksa option, were done well. Worth trying at least once rather than always eating off-property.
Location
The hotel connects directly to the Plaza Merdeka shopping center below, which means you can walk straight into air-conditioned convenience without going outside. From the hotel entrance, it is a short walk to the Kuching Waterfront. This is a genuinely practical location advantage in a city where the humidity can be intense and having a climate-controlled shortcut to a mall is not a luxury, it is a relief.
During our stay, there was a festival running right in front of the hotel. The waterfront was lively in the evenings and easy to explore on foot. Food stalls, local vendors, and families out for the evening made the promenade feel like the real cultural center of the city, which it essentially is.
Padungan Street, which is where the famous cat statues and many of the best cafes in Kuching are located, is around a 10-minute walk from the hotel. We walked it multiple times and never found the distance to be a problem.
Practical Tips
- Leave a honeymoon note. We are living proof that it is worth doing. A simple, genuine note when making the reservation costs nothing and the Waterfront Hotel took it seriously.
- Book directly with the hotel if possible. Boutique properties often have more flexibility to recognize occasions when the booking comes through their own system rather than a third-party platform.
- Pool check. Call the front desk the morning of if you are planning to swim. The private event schedule can affect access with little notice.
- Grab from the hotel is easy. The shopping mall entrance is a convenient pickup point for drivers and avoids any wait in the humidity.
- Evening on the waterfront is free. Plan to walk along the promenade after dinner at least once. The view of the river at night is one of Kuching's best free experiences.
Final Verdict
The Waterfront Hotel Kuching gave us one of the most memorable check-in experiences of the trip, and we were not even trying for it. The location is excellent, the suite itself is genuinely beautiful, and the river views are the best you will find in Kuching from a hotel room.
If you are visiting Kuching, this hotel is worth at least one night. Even at the base King Suite rate, the view and the location make it worthwhile. Book it, leave a note about any occasion you are celebrating, and see what happens. The staff here pay attention. They remember the details you share. That kind of hospitality is not something you find everywhere, and when you find it, it is worth recognizing.
