The Phoenician Scottsdale Full Review: Maximizing Amex FHR & Bonvoy Perks

We booked The Phoenician on Amex FHR and figured out how to double-dip with Marriott Platinum status. Here's our full review of the rooms, amenities, and how we maximized $250+ in credits.

The Phoenician in Scottsdale makes an impression the moment you pull up β€” grand lobby, expansive cactus garden, beautiful golf course. We booked our staycation through Amex Fine Hotels & Resorts and figured out how to double-dip those perks with Vincent's Marriott Platinum Elite status. Here is our honest take on the rooms, the amenities, and how to get the most value out of your stay.

First Impressions

The drive up to the property is intentional. The Phoenician sits at the base of Camelback Mountain, and the approach gives you a clear view of the scale of the resort before you even step inside. There is a certain grandeur to the entrance that is hard to describe without seeing it: the sweeping driveway, the lush desert landscaping, the fountains, the sheer amount of space. For a property in the middle of Scottsdale, it somehow manages to feel removed from everything.

The lobby carries through on that first impression. High ceilings, desert-inspired artwork, cool air that hits you the moment you walk in from the Arizona heat. The staff at the front desk knew we had arrived on an Amex FHR booking and acknowledged it immediately, which set the tone for the stay. This is a hotel that knows its guests are arriving with benefits and treats that as a feature rather than an inconvenience.

The Room: Grand Deluxe Casita

We arrived around 12:30 PM but opted to wait until 6:00 PM for a better room. Worth it β€” we were upgraded to a Grand Deluxe Casita with a pool view, plus an extra $150 resort credit for the wait.

The Vibe: The resort was built in 1988, and the furniture and decor reflect that β€” traditional and a bit dated rather than ultra-modern. The TV is not a smart TV, so you can't cast your own shows.

The Amenities: Incredibly spacious bathroom with a great tub and high-end bath products. Unique touches like complimentary chapstick, face wipes, and cushy slippers right next to the bed β€” small details that add up.

The casita layout itself was what stood out most. There is a meaningful difference between a standard hotel room and a casita: more square footage, a more residential feel, and an entrance that gives you a small transitional space between the outside and the room itself. The pool view from our casita was worth the wait. Watching the Scottsdale sunset from that vantage point was a genuinely nice end to the first evening.

A note on the TV situation: it is something we noticed and adjusted to quickly. We downloaded our shows to a tablet before arriving, which I'd recommend to anyone who likes to watch something before bed. The in-room entertainment system works, but it is limited to cable and on-demand content that does not include most streaming platforms.

The Amex FHR & Bonvoy "Double Dip"

This is where the real value is unlocked.

The Breakfast Stack: Amex FHR gives you an $80 daily breakfast credit for two. Because Vincent holds Marriott Platinum status, we also received an additional $38.50 daily breakfast credit β€” and the hotel lets you stack both together.

The Credits: Between our $100 FHR food and beverage credit and the extra $150 from the room delay, we had $250 to spend across the property. We put it toward dinner at J&G Steakhouse, afternoon tea, and gelato at the Marketplace β€” essentially a full dining itinerary covered.

The stacking of the breakfast credits is something most people do not know is possible. The hotel did not make it complicated. We simply presented both benefit confirmations at the restaurant and they applied both to the check. The total breakfast credit per day came to $118.50 for two people, which is more than enough to cover a proper sit-down breakfast with coffee and juice.

The $150 room delay credit was not something we planned for, but it is worth knowing that asking for a room upgrade and agreeing to wait is a real negotiation at luxury properties. The front desk offered it proactively when we asked about early check-in availability. If they cannot accommodate you immediately, asking whether there is any compensation for waiting is entirely reasonable and often results in exactly this kind of credit.

Gyms, Pools & The Spa

The property is very spread out β€” getting between facilities requires a walk or a golf cart ride.

The Main Athletic Club: Large and spacious with Matrix equipment, but the machines feel a bit outdated and there's no real view while you work out.

The Phoenician Spa: You don't have to be a hotel guest to book a treatment here, but if you are staying on property you gain access to a genuinely superior facility β€” rooftop pool, steam and dry saunas, and a private gym fully outfitted with brand new TechnoGym equipment. A significant upgrade over the main gym.

The Pools: Centrally located with family-friendly and adults-only sections. Food and drinks at the pool (including the piΓ±a coladas) are pricey and honestly not the best on property β€” save your credits for the restaurants.

The TechnoGym equipment at the spa gym was a genuine surprise. Brand new machines, a curated selection of free weights, and actual views of the desert landscape while you work out. It is a completely different experience from the main gym and worth the short walk over, especially if you are a regular gym person who does not want to sacrifice a workout during a luxury stay.

The pools are the obvious centerpiece of the property, and they deliver on that role. The adults-only section has the right balance of activity and quiet. We spent most of our pool time there. The family pool was noticeably louder and more chaotic, which is expected, but having the option to separate made a big difference in how relaxed the afternoon felt.

Final Thoughts

The Phoenician is a classic Scottsdale staple, and with the right card benefits and hotel status, you can offset a significant portion of the cost. The rooms feel older, but the service, grounds, and sheer amount of amenities make it worth it.

What stands out most in retrospect is how the property rewards guests who do a little homework before arriving. The Amex FHR and Marriott Platinum combination is not advertised anywhere obvious; we figured it out through research and asking the right questions at check-in. That extra $250 in credit coverage made the stay feel significantly more luxurious than the room rate alone would have suggested.

If you are a Marriott Platinum holder with an Amex Platinum or higher card and you are looking for an Arizona luxury property, The Phoenician is genuinely worth booking, especially if you can time it around a weekday stay when the property is less crowded and the staff has more bandwidth to accommodate requests.

Tips

  • Always ask about room upgrade options at check-in. If your preferred room is not ready, negotiate. The $150 credit we received for waiting was offered without us asking directly for compensation. Just asking about timing opened the door.
  • Stack the breakfast credits. If you have both Amex FHR benefits and Marriott elite status, present both at the breakfast restaurant on your first morning and confirm that both can be applied. The hotel allows this and it is a significant daily benefit.
  • Skip the pool bar and save credits for J&G Steakhouse. The pool drinks are overpriced and the quality is average. The Steakhouse is where the property's kitchen genuinely shines.
  • Book a spa treatment for access to the spa gym. Even a short treatment unlocks the full facility, including the rooftop pool and TechnoGym equipment, which are meaningfully better than the main athletic club.
  • Download your shows before arriving. The in-room TV is not a smart TV and does not support streaming. A downloaded Netflix queue solves this completely.
  • Use the golf cart service. The property is genuinely large and the Arizona heat makes walking between facilities in the middle of the day uncomfortable. The golf cart shuttles are free and frequent.
