We booked a staycation at The Phoenician, a Luxury Collection Resort in Scottsdale, and decided to really put their dining options to the test. Resort food can be hit or miss β and usually very expensive β so we used our Amex FHR credits and Marriott Bonvoy benefits to offset costs and give you an honest breakdown of everything we ate.
The Phoenician is one of Scottsdale's most iconic luxury properties, and with a resort of this caliber, the dining experience is a significant part of what you are paying for. We wanted to know: does the food actually live up to the setting? Here is everything we tried, what impressed us, what disappointed us, and what we would order again without hesitation.
J&G Steakhouse
Located on the top floor of the main lobby building, this is the resort's premier dining option. We didn't have a reservation but grabbed a table after a 20-minute wait at their beautiful bar.
The bar wait was actually a pleasant surprise. The J&G Steakhouse bar is a destination in itself: gorgeous views, a thoughtful cocktail list, and a warm atmosphere that made the wait feel effortless. If you show up without a reservation, which we do not particularly recommend on busy nights, heading straight to the bar and putting your name in is a comfortable strategy. The bartenders were attentive and the cocktail we ordered while waiting was excellent.
The restaurant itself sits at the top of the building with views that remind you why people specifically choose Scottsdale for a luxury resort experience. The desert landscape at sunset, viewed from a steakhouse with a glass of wine in hand, is genuinely difficult to beat.
The Grass-Fed Boneless Ribeye: We ordered this over the prime cut to save a bit. Fantastic β not heavily buttered, mostly just salt and pepper, letting the quality of the meat speak for itself.
The restraint in preparation is what makes the ribeye stand out. In an era where every steakhouse piles on compound butter and elaborate sauces, J&G lets the quality of the grass-fed beef carry the plate. The result is a cleaner, more mineral-forward flavor profile that lets you actually taste the meat rather than a layer of add-ons. It was cooked exactly to our requested temperature. Simple, precise, and deeply satisfying.
The Halibut: Served with a massive portion of mushrooms and a very unique minty, herb-heavy sauce. Refreshing at first, but the sourness and mint flavor got tiring halfway through. Probably wouldn't order it again.
The halibut itself was beautifully cooked, flaky and properly seasoned. The mushroom component was generous and earthy. Our hesitation was entirely with the sauce, which started out interesting and then became increasingly one-note as we worked through the plate. If you are someone who enjoys very herbaceous, acidic preparations, you will likely love it. For us, it wore out its welcome by the second half.
The "Violet" Cocktail: A beautiful lavender-based cocktail with egg white β very floral, almost like drinking a flower. A great unique choice if you like botanical drinks.
The egg white gives it a silky, almost creamy texture that is completely unexpected in a floral cocktail. The lavender is assertive without being perfume-like. This was the most interesting drink of the evening, and it generated a genuine conversation between us about what it tasted like. That is a sign of a well-executed cocktail.
The Phoenician Tavern (Mowry & Cotton Breakfast Menu)
The main breakfast spot, Mowry & Cotton, was temporarily closed during our visit, so breakfast was served out of The Tavern, which overlooks the golf course.
The golf course view from The Tavern is relaxed and open, a completely different energy from J&G. Morning light across the fairways, a quieter pace, and a menu designed for a leisurely breakfast. Even as a temporary substitute space, it worked well.
The $22 Avocado Toast: Skeptical going in, but it was surprisingly massive and genuinely unique. It uses a lemon whipped ricotta that completely changes the flavor profile. The bread was a bit tough to cut, but the flavors were excellent.
We have eaten a lot of avocado toast. At this point it is one of the most commoditized dishes in American restaurant culture, and charging $22 for it requires you to either do something genuinely different or accept that your guests will feel slightly ripped off. The Phoenician does something genuinely different. The lemon whipped ricotta adds a brightness and creaminess that elevates the whole dish above every standard avocado-mash-on-toast version we have had. The bread was dense and slightly chewy, which made cutting it a minor workout, but the flavor combination justified the price and then some.
The BLT: Came on an incredibly soft brioche bun with a fried egg and high-quality cheese. Vincent said it felt more like eating a gourmet breakfast burger than a sandwich β in the best way.
The brioche bun is the key. It is pillowy soft but structured enough to hold the whole thing together, which is a harder balance to achieve than it sounds. The fried egg adds richness that ties the bacon, lettuce, tomato, and cheese together into something that functions less like a traditional BLT and more like an elevated breakfast sandwich in the best sense. Vincent had zero regrets about that order.
The Marketplace
If you have leftover FHR or resort credits to use before checkout, this is the perfect spot to burn them.
Compared to other luxury resorts like the Arizona Biltmore, the Marketplace here doesn't aggressively upcharge β wide selection of snacks and quick bites at relatively reasonable prices.
The Marketplace functions as the resort's grab-and-go option, which every large luxury property needs. The difference here is that the quality and variety are genuinely strong for a convenience-oriented format. You are not limited to sad wrapped sandwiches and overpriced candy bars. There are proper snack options, drinks, and a few genuinely good bites worth seeking out.
The Highlights: The grab-and-go Panini was surprisingly good. The mocha Frappuccino is good but comes with zero added sweetener by default β worth knowing before you order. And the Phoenician Crunch gelato was our favorite thing we got at the Marketplace β don't miss it.
We went back for the Phoenician Crunch gelato twice. That is the highest possible endorsement we can give any single item at a resort Marketplace. It is their proprietary flavor, which means it is only available here, and it is the kind of thing that makes you wish you could buy a pint to take home. Rich, slightly crunchy from some kind of toffee or caramel brittle element, and deeply satisfying. If you are at The Phoenician and you have not yet had this gelato, fix that immediately.
The Vibe: Dining at The Phoenician Overall
What impressed us most about dining at The Phoenician across multiple venues was the consistent quality and attention to detail. From a top-floor steakhouse dinner to a casual grab-and-go gelato, the resort maintains a standard that justifies the Luxury Collection designation. The kitchen staff clearly takes pride in what they are serving, and that comes through whether you are spending $22 on avocado toast or ordering a grass-fed ribeye.
The Phoenician is excellent for guests who want to eat on-property without sacrificing quality or variety. For a weekend staycation or an extended stay, the combination of J&G for dinner, The Tavern for breakfast, and the Marketplace for everything in between covers the full range of dining needs.
Practical Info
The Phoenician is located in Scottsdale, Arizona, near Camelback Mountain. Reservations are strongly recommended for J&G Steakhouse, particularly on Friday and Saturday evenings. OpenTable is the most convenient booking option. The Marketplace and The Tavern are generally walk-in friendly. If you are booking a dinner at J&G and do not have a reservation, arrive early, head to the bar, and put your name in with the host.
If you are using Amex FHR or Marriott Bonvoy benefits, credits can typically be used across all dining venues on property, including the Marketplace. Confirm this with the front desk when you check in to make sure you are using your credits most effectively before checkout.
Final Thoughts
Food quality across the board at The Phoenician impressed us. Prices are at a premium, but the portion sizes and unique flavor profiles help justify the cost β especially with resort credits.
The J&G Steakhouse ribeye is worth every dollar. The Phoenician Crunch gelato is a non-negotiable. The lemon whipped ricotta on the avocado toast is one of those small details that elevates an entire dish. And the Violet cocktail is one of the more distinctive drinks we have had at any resort bar.
