Conrad Tulum Review: Is the Ceiba Club Suite Worth the Upgrade?

We splurged on a Ceiba Club Ocean View Suite at the Conrad Tulum β€” private outdoor jacuzzi, VIP check-in, and an Amex FHR birthday surprise. Here's whether it's worth the upgrade.

After an amazing stay at the Canopy Hotel, we drove about an hour and a half south to check into the Conrad Tulum Riviera Maya. This property is absolutely massive, and it sits right next to a Hilton All-Inclusive resort, with the two properties even sharing a spa.

We decided to splurge and book a suite in the exclusive Ceiba Club category. Here is our full, honest review and room tour to help you decide if the upgrade is worth it. The short answer: for a special occasion or a true splurge, yes. Here is the longer version.

The Ceiba Club VIP Check-In

The VIP treatment starts the moment you pull up to the gate. Instead of the main lobby, your luggage is immediately loaded into a golf cart and you are driven directly to a private check-in lounge for Ceiba Club guests.

We were greeted with fantastic, tangy welcome cocktails and sat down to eat lunch in the lounge while the staff handled all the check-in paperwork. Completely seamless, with no standing at a counter, no waiting for someone to locate your reservation, no queue. A great way to kick off a vacation. The difference between walking into a standard hotel lobby and being driven directly to a private lounge where your arrival is expected feels significant in the moment, especially after a travel day.

The staff in the Ceiba Club area were attentive throughout the check-in process without being intrusive. They explained the lounge schedule, the pool access, and the key differences between the Ceiba Club buildings and the main resort. That orientation matters because the Conrad Tulum is large enough that you can waste a lot of time wandering if nobody explains the layout.

Room Tour: Ceiba Club Ocean View Suite

Ceiba Club rooms are exclusive to Casa 1 and Casa 2, the two dedicated buildings on property. The suite is absolutely massive.

The Living Space: A huge living room with a massive couch, 65-inch TV, and a dining table large enough to actually eat at. The room felt like a real apartment rather than a hotel configuration. A large mini-bar area (items inside the fridge are not complimentary, which is worth knowing before you start reaching for things) and a filtered water station built into the room. Not a detail you find everywhere, but useful for a hot Mexican climate where staying hydrated is not optional.

Welcome gifts via Amex FHR: Because we booked through Fine Hotels and Resorts and were celebrating a birthday, they left us complimentary wine, fresh fruit, sunscreen, and an adorable stuffed turtle mascot on the bed. The turtle felt very on-brand for a property that is steps from a coastline with actual sea turtles. The wine was good and the fruit was fresh, which sounds basic but is not always the reality with complimentary amenity setups.

The Master Bedroom and Bathroom: King bed, second large TV, and floor-to-ceiling windows with an ocean view that is genuinely stunning in the morning when the light is right. Enormous walk-in waterfall shower with an ocean view through the glass, which is the kind of design choice that sounds indulgent until you are standing in a waterfall shower looking at the Caribbean and realize it is completely justified. Huge double vanity, private toilet room, and closet space stocked with robes, slippers, and a beach bag. The beach bag was a thoughtful touch: not just decoration, actually usable.

The Star of the Show: The Balcony

The massive wraparound balcony connects the living room to the bedroom, with an outdoor couch, lounge chairs, and a private outdoor Jacuzzi tub. We spent the most time out here by a significant margin. Sitting in the Jacuzzi at night with the ocean in front of you and the warm air around you is genuinely one of the better experiences we have had at any property. It is the kind of moment that makes you feel like the upgrade price was correct. If there is one feature that makes the Ceiba Club Suite what it is, it is this balcony.

Resort Amenities: Pools, Gym, and The Beach

The Pools: Multiple stunning pools surrounded by cabanas and in-water loungers. The architecture around the main lobby and pool areas is gorgeous, with the kind of dramatic natural-material design that photographs well but also actually functions well in person. Some of the best photo spots on the property are here. The pools can get busy during the middle of the day, so if you want a cabana with good positioning, claim it early.

The Gym: Spacious, well-equipped with cardio machines and free weights, and plenty of room to actually move around. Vincent approved, which is the clearest endorsement I can give given how seriously he takes gym quality on trips. It was clean, well-maintained, and had enough equipment that you were never waiting for a machine.

The Beach: Beautiful, but be aware of seaweed. During our stay there was quite a bit washed up on the shoreline, which is a seasonal reality on this stretch of the Riviera Maya rather than a specific Conrad Tulum problem. The staff works every morning to clear it, but it is dependent on the time of year and the wind patterns. Once you get past the murky edge near the sand, the water clears up beautifully. Snorkeling just offshore was genuinely good.

The beach setup includes chairs and shade structures. Getting a good spot requires being reasonably early, similar to any popular resort beach.

The Amex FHR Birthday Experience

We booked through Fine Hotels and Resorts specifically because we were celebrating a birthday, and the perks associated with FHR at the Conrad Tulum were meaningful. Beyond the welcome amenities mentioned above, the FHR booking also included a daily breakfast credit, a room upgrade when available (which contributed to how we ended up in the suite), and late checkout.

The staff were aware of the birthday occasion and made small gestures throughout the stay that acknowledged it without being over the top. That balance is harder to get right than it sounds. We have been at properties where birthday treatment feels performative and slightly embarrassing. Here it felt genuine and well-calibrated.

If you have an Amex card that includes Fine Hotels and Resorts access, this is a property where using it makes a visible difference in the experience.

Practical Tips for the Conrad Tulum Ceiba Club

Is Ceiba Club worth it? If you are celebrating something special and the price difference between a standard room and a suite fits your budget, yes. The private balcony Jacuzzi is the defining feature. If that does not appeal to you, a standard room at the Conrad Tulum still gives you access to the pools, beach, and resort facilities.

Seaweed: Check the season before you book if beach swimming is a priority. The sargassum situation on the Riviera Maya varies significantly by time of year, with spring and early summer typically being worse than fall. The Conrad Tulum manages it well but cannot control the ocean.

Getting there: The drive from Cancun airport to the Conrad Tulum takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours depending on traffic through Playa del Carmen. A rental car is convenient for this stretch if you plan to explore the area. See our travel day post on rental car tips for Mexico.

Booking: Book through FHR if you have Amex access. The additional perks are significant enough to justify using the booking channel rather than going direct.

Final Thoughts

The Ceiba Club Suite at Conrad Tulum delivered on every front we cared about. The room size alone is impressive, the private outdoor Jacuzzi is a genuine luxury, and the VIP check-in sets the right tone from the very start. If you are celebrating something special or just want a true splurge in the Riviera Maya, this is a strong choice.
