Cancun just opened a brand-new Hello Kitty Cafe in May 2024, and as fans of unique dining experiences, we knew we had to check it out as our very first stop after landing. Located in the Grand Outlet Mall, only about 13 minutes from the Cancun International Airport, it is a perfect post-flight treat before heading into the Hotel Zone.

Hello Kitty Cafes have become a global phenomenon, with locations in Tokyo, Los Angeles, and now Cancun. Character cafes often disappoint because the novelty overshadows the actual food. This one surprised us. The theming is fun and genuinely well-done, and the food held its own on taste. If you are a fan of Hello Kitty or just someone who appreciates a well-designed space with a good meal, this restaurant earns a stop on the itinerary.

Here is our full review of the food, the booking process, and the "Cenote experience."

Booking Your Visit

You have two main options for reservations:

OpenTable: A standard reservation with no upfront cost.

Exploretock (Recommended): You pay about $24 USD (400 pesos) per person upfront, but that amount serves as a food and beverage credit when you arrive. This also guarantees access to the "Cenote experience." We went this route and would recommend it.

We visited on a Monday right at their 1:00 PM opening and it was not crowded at all. Weekends can get much busier, so booking ahead is smart regardless.

The Exploretock booking is the move if you are planning to eat a full meal anyway, which you should, because the food is worth it. You are essentially pre-paying for your meal and gaining priority access to the most unique part of the experience. The math works in your favor.

Getting There from the Airport

The Grand Outlet Mall where the Hello Kitty Cafe is located is about a 13-minute drive from Cancun International Airport. This made it an ideal first stop on our trip: clear customs, grab a taxi or shuttle, drop bags at the cafe coat check, and eat before checking into the hotel.

If you are heading into the Hotel Zone afterward, the cafe is essentially on the way. You are not doubling back or going out of your way. It slots naturally into the first afternoon of a Cancun trip.

The Vibe and Atmosphere

A beautiful two-story space with a mix of indoor and outdoor seating on the first floor and a great view of the cafe's decor from the second floor, where we were seated. The design is exactly what you would expect: bright, pink, playful, and very photogenic.

Every detail in the space is considered. The menus are branded with Hello Kitty art. The table settings are pink. The serving dishes arrive shaped or decorated to match the theme. It is the kind of place where people are taking photos constantly, and the staff seem completely used to it. They helped us find the best angle for a few shots without us even having to ask.

The music was upbeat and the overall energy was cheerful without being overwhelming. Even if you are not a Hello Kitty fan specifically, the space is genuinely well-designed and fun to be in.

The Food and Drinks: Better Than Expected

Character cafes often prioritize looks over taste. This one delivered on both.

Kiwi and Strawberry Margaritas: Refreshing and perfect for the Cancun heat, just drink them quickly, because they melt fast. Served with adorable Hello Kitty-themed garnishes. The sweetness level was right: fun without being cloying. A great way to start the meal.

The Sliders: A major highlight. Not your basic beef and cheese, the patties are seasoned with a blend of ingredients that reminded us of a Korean-style meat patty (similar to wanja-jeon). Flavorful, juicy, and served on super cute pink buns. We ordered these expecting them to be mostly aesthetic and were genuinely impressed by how well the meat was seasoned. These are the dish to order.

Fish and Shrimp Tacos: Massive portions. The fish tacos had three giant pieces of fish that were almost too big for the tortillas. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and seasoned. In a beach destination like Cancun, seafood tacos are a baseline expectation and these cleared that bar easily.

The portions across everything were larger than we anticipated. We were full after the sliders and tacos and had not even touched our margaritas yet when they arrived.

The "Cenote" Experience

If you spend at least 300 pesos (easy to hit if you book through Exploretock), you get access to the Cenote room.

To be clear: it is not a real cenote. It is a beautifully designed immersive room with Hello Kitty projections and mirrors. Think of it as a themed photo opportunity rather than an outdoor experience. An amazing spot for photos and videos, and it absolutely adds to the overall experience of the visit.

The projections change, so if you stand in the room long enough you get a full cycle of different visuals against the mirrored surfaces. The effect is genuinely impressive and more elaborate than we expected from a cafe space. If you are creating content for social media or just want memorable photos from your trip, this room delivers.

The attendant at the door gives you a brief orientation and then gives you a window of time inside. It does not feel rushed, and the space accommodates a few people at a time without feeling crowded.

Shopping Before You Leave

Before heading out, stop by the boutique on the first floor. Any leftover credit from your Exploretock reservation can be applied to merchandise: keychains, mugs, apparel, and more. We picked up a Hello Kitty Cafe keychain as a souvenir.

The merchandise quality is decent. Not everything is worth buying but the smaller items like keychains and mugs are solid souvenirs that are specific to this location. You would not find the same branded pieces at a general Hello Kitty store.

Practical Tips

  • Book through Exploretock if you plan to eat a full meal. The pre-paid credit covers your food and you get Cenote access included.
  • Visit on a weekday morning for a relaxed experience. We arrived at opening on a Monday and had the place nearly to ourselves.
  • 13 minutes from the airport: Make it your first stop after landing and before checking into your hotel.
  • Drink the margaritas quickly: They are served over ice and Cancun heat melts them fast.
  • Save room for the sliders: Skip filler appetizers and go straight to the sliders and tacos, which are the strongest items on the menu.
  • The boutique takes your Exploretock credit: If you have leftover balance after eating, apply it to merchandise on the way out.
  • Bring your camera: The Cenote room especially rewards having a camera rather than just a phone, though a phone works fine too.

Final Thoughts

We were genuinely surprised by the quality of the food here. The sliders alone are worth the visit, and the Cenote room is a fun bonus for content creators or anyone who wants memorable photos from the trip. A colorful and delicious way to kick off a Cancun vacation.

For a character cafe, Hello Kitty Cancun earns a real recommendation beyond the novelty. The food is good, the space is beautiful, and the proximity to the airport makes it an easy addition to any Cancun trip without much planning. If you are landing in Cancun and have a few hours before your resort check-in, this is exactly where you should be.
