Kaya Toast Breakfast in Singapore & Malaysia: A Comforting Local Classic

Discover the joy of kaya toast — a classic breakfast found across Singapore and Malaysia. Toasted bread, creamy coconut jam, soft-boiled eggs, and kopi come together in this simple yet nostalgic meal.

🥪 A Comforting Breakfast: Kaya Toast with Soft-Boiled Eggs

There’s something incredibly comforting about starting your day with kaya toast. Whether you’re in Singapore or Malaysia, this breakfast is a quiet little ritual — warm toast, creamy coconut jam, a rich slab of butter, and perfectly soft-boiled eggs on the side.

🍞 What Exactly Is Kaya Toast?

Kaya is a traditional jam made from coconut milk, eggs, sugar, and pandan leaves, giving it a lightly sweet and fragrant flavor. The toast is usually soft white bread, grilled until crisp, then slathered with kaya and thick slices of cold butter.

It’s usually served with:

  • 2 soft-boiled eggs, cracked into a bowl
  • A dash of soy sauce and white pepper
  • A hot cup of kopi (coffee) or teh (milk tea)

And yes — you dip the toast right into the eggs. It’s sweet, salty, creamy, and just a little messy in the best way.

🍞 Recipe!

Kaya Toast with Soft-Boiled Eggs

Prep Time: 5 mins | Cook Time: 7 mins

Ingredients

  • 4 slices white bread (thin-sliced, crusts optional)
  • 2 tablespoons pandan kaya (coconut egg jam)
  • 2 slabs cold butter (about ¼ inch thick)
  • 4 eggs (room temperature)
  • Soy sauce
  • White pepper
  • Optional: kopi or teh (local-style coffee or milk tea)

Instructions

  1. Toast the bread until golden brown and crisp.
  2. Spread kaya on one side of each slice and top with a slab of cold butter. Sandwich together and slice in half.
  3. In a small pot, bring water to a boil. Turn off the heat and gently place the eggs into the hot water. Cover and let sit for 6–7 minutes. Or you can boil the egg to make your own soft boiled egg. If your egg is under cook, microwave 15 seconds to check until your egg has the consistency you want.
  4. Crack the eggs into a bowl. Add a splash of soy sauce and a dash of white pepper.
  5. Serve immediately with kaya toast on the side. Dip the toast into the eggs or enjoy separately.
